The Structural Analysis Laboratory at GLA University, Mathura, is equipped with a range of experimental apparatus
designed to provide students with practical knowledge of structural behaviour and to validate theoretical concepts of structural engineering.
The laboratory houses equipment such as Two-Hinged Arch, Three-Hinged Arch, Column and Struts Apparatus, Deflection of Truss Apparatus, Curved Member Apparatus, Deflected Beam Apparatus, Redundant Joint Apparatus, Unsymmetrical Bending Apparatus, and Clark Maxwell Apparatus. These instruments enable students to investigate the behaviour of arches under loading, understand the stability and buckling characteristics of columns and struts, determine deflections in beams and trusses, and study the response of curved members under applied loads. The Unsymmetrical Bending Apparatus helps students understand the behaviour of structural members subjected to bending about different axes, while the Redundant Joint Apparatus facilitates the study of forces and deformations in statically indeterminate structures.
The Clark Maxwell Apparatus provides practical insight into the reciprocal relationship between displacement and force in structural systems. The laboratory also includes equipment for studying the elastic properties and deflection of beams, enabling students to understand the relationship between applied loads, material properties, and structural deformation.
Through experiments using these apparatus, students develop essential skills in measurement, observation, data recording, calculation, and comparison of experimental results with theoretical predictions. The laboratory supports the teaching of subjects such as Structural Analysis, Mechanics of Solids, and Structural Engineering by strengthening students’ understanding of load transfer, equilibrium, deformation, stability, and structural response.
It also encourages analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and an appreciation of the assumptions and limitations involved in structural modelling. The availability of these experimental facilities helps bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical engineering applications, preparing students to analyse and understand the behaviour of real structural systems.
Overall, the Structural Analysis Laboratory serves as an important academic facility for undergraduate Civil Engineering students, supporting outcome-based education, hands-on learning, and the development of fundamental competencies required for the analysis and design of safe, stable, and efficient structures.
