Development of herbal formulation from medicinal plants

Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP), cause of Johne’s disease (JD) in domestic livestock is endemic world-wide and 72.0% of US dairy cattle herds are infected with JD.

Project Name: Development of herbal formulation from medicinal plants (Ocimum sanctum and Solanum xanthocarpum) for the therapeutic management of Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis infection in domestic livestock"

Duration : 3 Years (2020-2023) Ongoing

Summary

Bio-load in our livestock in last 28 years has shown rising trend & is highest (6.0-54.7%). Infection leads to chronic enteritis and lymph adenitis. However to absence of vaccine, control MAP infection in human population can be accomplished, either by surgical removal of infected intestines or using anti-tuberculosis drugs, had limited success. Prolonged use of anti-tuberculosis drugs led to development of drug resistance. As per the 'Ayurveda Encyclopedia' Ocimum sanctum and Solanum xanthocarpum, is known to possess anti-Mycobacterial activity, in reference to M. tuberculosis. This study will first time evaluate the anti-Mycobacterial properties of above two medicinal plants against MAP infection. These potent bioactive compounds may represent novel leads toward development of pharmacologically acceptable anti-tubercular bioactive compound.
