Do urban infrastructural schemes signal the rise of civil engineering in India?

Have you ever heard the popular phrase by civil engineers? It’s “The road to success is always under construction”. The construction industry is growing fast, and so is the demand for civil engineers. As per a study, India’s urban population is the second highest in the world; it is expected to reach 50% of the world population by 2050. Considering this fact, the government has launched multiple infrastructure development programmes in urban areas. If it goes as per speculations, the demand for civil engineering will greatly drift in the coming years. This blog states how urban infrastructure development would impact civil engineering growth.

How did government-led schemes for urban infrastructural development lead to the rise of civil engineering?

The Indian Government has raised an initiative to transform the infrastructure of urban areas through multiple schemes as mentioned below –

Smart Cities Mission

The Government has started the infrastructural development initiative in about 100 cities across India through Smart Cities Mission. The scheme aims at modernizing the condition of urban areas in terms of infrastructure, the standard of living, clean environment and automation in work. The programme’s first phase covers 20 cities, and the next two years will be given to other cities for a well-modernized structure. Under smart solutions, the infrastructure and services are transformed through the latest tools and technology.

This project by the Ministry of Urban Development would exaggerate the demand for civil engineers in India. However, the Government would pick the engineers from recognized and reputed colleges through direct placements.

Project AMRUT

AMRUT, or Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation, is a five-year project that focuses on improvising the living conditions of about 500 cities and towns. The estimated funding for this mission is 50,000 crores as approved by the Cabinet. This scheme gets 80% budget allocation from the Centre. The points to be included in this scheme are as follows –

  1. An uninterrupted water supply with proper sewerage connection is promised for every household under the scheme
  2. It promotes the construction of parks and open spaces to make Green India
  3. It cuts down the pollution by encouraging the use of cycling and e-rickshaw and making separate walkways for the same

Here also, the need for construction engineers arises. Right from the planning and designing of the project to its cost calculations and final implementation, the project manager takes care of all.

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana

Launched by the Central Government, the motto of this scheme is ‘Housing for All by 2022’, which clearly means that all the people in the cities will get houses by 2022. The scheme governs the states and UTs to start working on constructing houses for weaker sections of society. The scheme’s main aim is to build houses for urban slums and economically weaker sections. The task would be given to highly competent civil engineers from prominent universities or institutes with good work experience.

HRIDAY (Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana)

HRIDAY scheme emphasizes preserving the real structure of heritage cities and handling their overall maintenance and development. The programme gets Rs 500 crore funding from the Centre for retaining the cultural essence of 12 cities, including Amaravati, Ajmer and Amritsar. The young and sharp talent in civil engineering would be boosted for this scheme, and hiring is done based on their performance, experience and college of engineering.

JNNURM (Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission)

Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, launched in 2005, has a flagship mission for urban development that includes Basic Services for Urban poor (BSUP) and Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme (IHSDP). The scheme aims to render basic and civic facilities and shelter to slum areas. Here, civil engineers do onsite investigations and analyze various factors under the project’s planning.

This is how Government-led schemes attract civil engineers and enhance the demand for construction and civil engineering in India. To pursue the course in this stream, consider GLA University, which provides a great scope of civil engineering with specializations in various areas. It offers an industry-driven approach and a well-researched curriculum to the students. The university’s Civil Engineering Department is equipped with the latest resources and modernized laboratories. The faculty provides a dynamic learning environment that focuses on the students’ problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills.
