Communication Systems Lab

This lab is designed to provide students with hands-on experience in the field of control engineering. Control systems are an essential aspect of modern engineering, used in everything from aircraft and spacecraft to industrial processes and automated systems. In this lab, students will learn about various control system components, including sensors, actuators, controllers, and communication protocols. They will also learn how to design, implement, and test control systems using various techniques, such as classical control theory and modern control theory. The lab is equipped with various hardware and software tools, including microcontrollers, sensors, actuators, and simulation software. Students will work in teams to complete a series of lab assignments, where they will apply their theoretical knowledge to real-world problems. By the end of the lab, students will have gained a deeper understanding of control system design and implementation, as well as practical experience working with control system components and software tools. They will be equipped with the skills needed to design and implement control systems for a variety of engineering applications.

Major Components

Spectrum Analyzer

lab-img

A spectrum analyzer measures the magnitude of an input signal versus frequency within the full frequency range of the instrument. The primary use is to measure the power of the spectrum of known and unknown signals. The input signal that most common spectrum analyzers measure is electrical; however, spectral compositions of other signals, such as acoustic pressure waves and optical light waves, can be considered through the use of an appropriate transducer. Spectrum analyzers for other types of signals also exist, such as optical spectrum analyzers which use direct optical techniques such as a monochromator to make measurements.

By analyzing the spectra of electrical signals, dominant frequency, power, distortion, harmonics, bandwidth, and other spectral components of a signal can be observed that are not easily detectable in time domain waveforms. These parameters are useful in the characterization of electronic devices, such as wireless transmitters.

The display of a spectrum analyzer has frequency on the horizontal axis and the amplitude displayed on the vertical axis. To the casual observer, a spectrum analyzer looks like an oscilloscope and, in fact, some lab instruments can function either as an oscilloscope or a spectrum analyzer.

Benefits :

  • The ability to measure smaller signals: on the basis of this technology, the IF filter enables smaller bandwidth settings, which greatly reduce the displayed average noise level.
  • The ability to distinguish between small signals by frequency: using the IF filter with the smallest bandwidth setting it is possible to make out signals with a frequency difference of only 10 Hz.
  • High precision amplitude readings: this technology almost eliminates the errors generated by filter switching, reference level uncertainty, scale distortion, as well as errors produced in the process of switching between logarithmic and linear display of amplitude when using a traditional analog IF design.
  • Higher reliability: compared with traditional analog designs, the digital IF greatly reduces the complexity of the hardware, the system instability caused by channel aging, and the temperature sensitivity that can contribute to parts failure.
  • High measurement speed: the use of digital IF technology improves the bandwidth precision and selectivity of the filter, minimizing the scanning time and improving the speed of the measurement.
